I spent a day in March meeting two of the best Instagram photographers in Pittsburgh at Beerhive in The Strip, and one of those guys was Justin (or, as you may know him, imjust). It was hard for me to tell when I met him, and even when I go back and listen to the recording, if we were both just really excited to be there or if we were just sitting too close to the speakers because I’m such an amateur… But, in the several times we’ve been able to run around and take pics together since then, I have realized that Justin is just a really happy, fun guy to be around with lots of enthusiasm. Another thing I’ve realized, which doesn’t translate into this audio recording but which I absolutely must mention, is that the dude has a killer sense of style and always stands out. I suppose, upon glancing through his unique feed, this should come as no surprise.
What most people want to know about Justin from this interview is how he goes about concocting his style, and I had a go at this which led us to several apps and a very technical conversation that lasted for minutes and told me he really knew what he was doing and was true to his method. Everything Justin does, he does on his phone – from a snapped on fisheye appliance to an “assembly line” of five or so apps, leading to his graffiti type dreamworld art that can make things look cool from skylines to horizons to people (like yours truly). In fact, one really cool thing about Justin is that he is so willing to make art out of his friends and other photographers that he likes to work with – very cool, man. Most of this work is done from a seat on the bus. You can hear the value he places in other local photographer’s styles, as well as his own, here. This type of focus and passion has not gone for nothing, leading him to collaborations in generating album art and hanging out personally with Snoop Dog – err Lion – err… Snoop among others, all of which stems completely from a self-made graphic design background. And along with accolades like that, for what it’s worth, he is widely considered one of the best Instagram follows in The City of Pittsburgh. If you haven’t, I suggest you follow him to catch up on his steady stream of unique Pittsburgh art.
